Hong Kong Express

Hong Kong Express is a Chinese restaurant on South Jefferson, close to where Jefferson meets the Cherokee Street corridor, doing the American-Chinese cooking that neighbourhood restaurants across the country have made their own.

The menu is broad and the fried rice section unusually so. General Tso’s chicken and sweet and sour chicken are the mainstays, at prices that have stayed sensible, and the kitchen has a following for its chicken gizzards – the dish regulars mention first and visitors rarely expect.

The operation is built for speed and volume: orders come out hot and fast, portions are generous, and a good share of the business is carry-out. It is a weekday lunch and early evening sort of place rather than a destination for dinner.

Hong Kong Express stands on South Jefferson a couple of blocks from the eastern end of Cherokee Street, an easy walk or a very short drive from Cherokee Antique Row.
