LA Marler Gallery
LA Marler Gallery is an independent art space on Cherokee Street, at the point where Antique Row meets the neighborhood’s arts district, near the southeast corner of Jefferson. It was opened in 2021 by photographic artist Louise Anne Marler, known as LA Marler. She is the third generation of a St. Louis family that sold and repaired typewriters.
The gallery is home to The TypOsphere StL, a typewriter museum, manual typewriter repair shop and art gallery under one roof. The collection includes more than 150 antique typewriters, most of them collected by the Marler family over three generations. Visitors can sit down at a typing station and try the machines themselves. Among the exhibits is a typewriter that was given to the gallery by Tom Hanks. Alongside the museum, the gallery shows contemporary fine art and sells handmade gifts.
The space also hosts workshops, literary events and meetups of the St. Louis Typers’ Union. It takes part in the Second Saturday gallery crawl on Cherokee Street. For anyone browsing Antique Row, it is a place to see how typewriters worked and to type on one.
