Murphy’s Mutts

Murphy’s Mutts & Cuts is the neighbourhood dog groomer on Cherokee Street, and after well over a decade in the same storefront it is one of the shops that locals name without having to think about it.

Grooming is the main business – baths, trims and the full clip, done by people who have handled most of the dogs on this side of south St. Louis and know which ones need patience. Alongside the grooming table the shop keeps a retail counter: toys, treats, collars and leads, and good-quality dog food, which saves a trip elsewhere for anyone already coming in.

The shop is women-owned and appears on Cherokee Street’s own listings of women-owned businesses, which is a fair reflection of how much of this street is run by its owners rather than by anybody’s head office.

Murphy’s stands at 2307 Cherokee Street, among the antique and vintage shops of the Row. It is a practical listing rather than a destination for visitors – but for anyone living nearby with a dog, it is the address to know.
